Adventures in Design by Joen Wolfrom- a review

October 11, 2011 § 2 Comments

I received an eBook of Joen Wolfrom’s Adventures in Design from C&T Publishing recently. I was really interested to read it as I already have another of Joen’s books – Color Play. The book didn’t disappoint. I really enjoyed it.

I found it so interesting, I read it from cover to cover in one sitting. I know I was supposed to do the exercises but I just wanted to keep reading. The text is engaging, easy-to-read and very useful if you struggle to make balanced, aesthetically pleasing designs.  There are lots of beautiful full colour pictures of quilts that illustrate the correct use of the various design elements. If you enjoy designing your own quilts but sometimes feel there’s something “not quite right” with the design then this book will allow you to understand why and will help you correct it. Definitely one for the bookshelf of every artist – fibre or otherwise. And if you don’t want to design your own quilt? Well the eye-candy alone (153 quilts) makes this worth buying.

The only downside I found was the fact that it was an eBook. For some books this doesn’t matter but when you want to do exercises – like the ones in this book – you want to take the book with you to the sewing room but when the book is on your computer in the study that’s not possible.
